Where are we? The Lot Department is located in the Midi-Pyrenees region of south-west France and can be reached by car, plane or train. Our home is situated in the north-east of the department on the edge of the village of Lacam D'Ourcet about 15 minutes from the delightful town of St. Céré. See further information below about various travel options. To explore the area, a car is essential and if you are not driving down then car hire is available at the airports and rail stations. Travelling by Car From the Channel
Ports you can, if you wish, travel most of the way on the autoroute.
We recommend leaving the A20 autoroute south of Brive-la-Gaillarde
at junction 53 taking the D820 then D840 to Martel where you take
the D803 to Bretenoux and then onwards to St Cere. We will provide
you with detailed directions to Lacam D'Ourcet by post or email. For a comprehensive
route map showing time, distance, toll charges and fuel costs visit
the MAPPY website. If
you want to break the journey or visit other parts of France, Drive-Alive
Holidays offer you a full range of ferry crossings, although
you must book at least two nights' accommodation with them. Prices
are competitive and we have found their personal service excellent.
Travelling by Air The situation with flights is rather fluid with airlines opening and closing routes all the time. Below is a guide to some of the flights we are aware of but there may be other UK airports with flights so it always worth checking with the airline's websites. The nearest airport (less than an hour) is the new one opened in 2010 just south of Brive and is known as "Brive - Vallee de la Dordogne". Current information we have for the summer are flights by Cityjet from London City airport. There is also a regular flight from Paris. There are suggestions that other low cost operators will start using the airport so it is worth checking the latest on the internet. Our next closest airport is Rodez, approximately 75 minutes away, which is served by Ryanair from Stansted and Dublin. There is also an Air France service from Paris. Limoges airport is about 2 hours up the A20 autoroute. There are flights from various UK airports by Ryanair and by Flybe. Toulouse airport is just over 2 hours 15 minutes away and is served by British Airways from Heathrow, Easy Jet from Gatwick and Bristol and British Midland from East Midlands. Other airlines are starting to fly to Toulouse so check on the internet for the latest information. If you are touring the south-west of France there are also services to Bergerac airport about 2 hours and 45 minutes away, from several UK airports. Car Hire (see
below) is available at each airport (Position at Brive to be confirmed).
Pre-booking is recommended. Travelling by Rail Our closest mainline station is at Brive-la-Gaillarde. There is a direct service from Paris Austerlitz station and the travelling time is approximately 4 hours. We recommend investigating pre-booking the rail ticket in the UK as it may be cheaper. The rail service is operated by SNCF. Car Hire (see below) is available next to Brive station and again pre-booking is recommended. The car journey from Brive is very pretty and takes just over one hour. We can arrange a pick-up from Brive station - please contact us for details of the cost - although for a stay of any length you do need your own car.
Hiring a Car All the airports and main towns are well served by the major car hire companies. Links to their websites are shown opposite or you can go to the UK website of travelsupermarket.com for a price comparison service that automatically finds the cheapest deal (we have not used the service so cannot vouch for it). Pre-booking is recommended. For a comprehensive
route map showing time, distance, toll charges and fuel costs visit
the MAPPY website.
